The Cook County highway department announced the kick-off for a new construction project today. It will be a Multi-Use Trail, located on the West side of the Gunflint Trail from TH 61 to 5th St/CR 7. The Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Multi-Use Trail will be a 10-foot-wide bituminous trail for pedestrians and bicyclists. Construction will begin the week of August 15th and is expected to last one month.
Per Robert Hass, Cook County Highway Department Head, “The trail is part of creating a more walkable community via the adopted pedestrian plans through the City of Grand Marais and Cook County.” The contract was awarded to KGM Contractors, Inc., the low bidder at $263,741. Cook County was awarded a competitive grant through the SRTS program for $206,000 and the remainder of the project will be paid for through our annual municipal state aid highway (MSAH) allocation from the state.
