Cook County Higher Education continues successful Commercial Driver’s License Program

In the last 12 months, Cook County Higher Education (CCHE) has enrolled thirty four Cook County residents in Commercial Driver’s License A, B or B-Bus training, and aided twelve more residents in securing their CDL license by providing Behindthe Wheel (BTW) training. Starting May 1st, there is an opportunity for up to 20 more participants to enroll in this FREE training.

The training is normally taught in Hibbing through Minnesota North College – Customized Training Solutions. However, through the efforts of CCHE and many local and regional advocates, CCHE has been able to bring the online learning modules, the written exam, MnDOT physical, and the BTW training to Cook County. Students only leave the county for a 5-panel drug screening and BTW testing.

With the proper CDL license, one can legally drive a school bus, semi-truck, dump truck, garbage truck, and many other large vehicles necessary to make our local community thrive. The cost for the training ranges from $2,995 to $5,495 per student, but CCHE provides the training to residents for FREE with the help of MnDOT Office of Civil Rights and IRRR. CCHE covers tuition and administrative expenses that fall outside of funding support. Many agencies are cooperating to make this program successful. Additionally, the program would not have happened without the advocacy and support of Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Chairman, Bobby Deschampe.
