The Cook County/ Grand Marais Economic Development Authority Board has named Beth Drost the new Executive Director of the EDA. Drost, a career-long public servant, is former Chairwoman of the Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council. As Chairwoman, she presided over the five-member Council and was ultimately responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the tribal nation. She also served as a Ranger with the Grand Portage National Monument for over twelve years.
Drost, will succeed Mary Somnis, who is retiring after five years at the EDA. With Somnis at the lead, the EDA has completed multiple housing projects and increased development and expansion of the EDA-owned Cedar Grove Business Park and Superior National at Lutsen golf course. The EDA Board expresses gratitude to Mary and wishes her well as she enters retirement. Drost will have two weeks of overlap with Somnis to ensure a smooth transition.
When asked about the hiring process, Howard Hedstrom, president of the EDA stated, “This position attracted an exceptionally strong candidate list, we had a difficult decision narrowing the field. Ultimately, we chose Beth because she has a keen eye toward the future and understands the importance of working with all stakeholders in the County.”
Beth is a Cook County High School graduate and 2019 graduate of the Blandin Reservation Community Leadership Program. “I am absolutely thrilled about working with the EDA board, and I am excited to put my experience and skills to work for our county-wide community.”
Drost holds degrees in both Business Administration/Marketing and Political Science. She has served on several boards and is currently a board member for the Duluth- Superior Area Educational Television Corporation and WTIP community radio station.
The new executive director will be tasked with fulfilling the mission of the EDA which is to enhance and grow the economic vitality of Cook County. The executive director will work with the EDA board to provide economic diversity, broad-based prosperity, quality jobs, housing, and a sustainable quality of life.
