Cook County GOP convention elects the youngest chair in the state

Last spring Trent Spry was graduating from Cook County High School. Today, he is in the Minnesota Air National Guard and is the Cook County Republican Party’s new chair.

Trent was elected chair at the party’s February 5 party convention held on ZOOM.

Also elected to office was Rae Piepho, Deputy Chair; Kim Nelson, Secretary; and Bob Spry, treasurer.

Unlike many graduating seniors, Trent has a good idea of what he wants to do in the future, and it’s a future he hopes includes serving in public office.

In his introductory letter to the GOP, Trent wrote, “While I am young, I don’t lack experience in our local BPOU or the Republican Party as a whole.

“I first became interested in politics when I attended my first caucus as an observer during the 2016 Presidential Primary season, and that same year I volunteered to work at our booth during the annual Fisherman’s Picnic celebrations. Since then, I have had the honor of attending multiple speeches given by President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Stewart Mills, Congressman Pete Stauber, and Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan.

“Most recently, I was the delegate for Cook County during the Minnesota GOP Convention last spring.

“Currently, I am enlisted in the Minnesota Trent Spry Air National Guard and am attending Technical Training for my Air Force Specialty Code on Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

I will return home this spring and will continue my goals of higher education in the fall. While I am in Duluth, I plan on keeping my address local so I can continue to be an active member of our party and the community.

“As a young conservative, I know the importance of engaging, recruiting, and encouraging Republicans and Conservatives alike while letting the people know they deserve a voice in our government. While we may be a small local party, we can still get the word out about our candidates, host meet-and-greets, and most importantly, get out the vote.”

Trent acknowledged that while he will be living in Duluth and going to college, “I plan on being on the ballot for elected office in the next few years, and I cannot wait to represent the great people of this county, this state, and this country someday.”
