The Cook County Knowledge Bowl team headed to the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament on Thursday, April 10, facing off with teams from around the region at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd.

Coach April Wahlstrom was delighted with her team’s 9th place finish at state competition. “They continue to improve each year,” she said.

The team that traveled to the state meet included Joey Chmelik, Sophie Honeder, Sean MacDonell, and Will Seaton.

The meet began on Thursday night with a written test, which put Cook County in 8th place. That gave them great placement for the oral rounds the next day. “There wasn’t as much pressure and they could gain more points,” said Wahlstrom.

“They were calm and collected.”

“How amazing were they? Here’s an example,” said Wahlstrom. “Question: ‘Which president gave these lines in his farewell address?’ Buzz, our team answered, ‘George Washington.’”

“That was correct. They didn’t even have to hear any of the lines from the speech!”

“They did a marvelous job!” she said.
