Cook County falls to North Woods

The Cook County High School girls opened their 2021-2022 season at home against the North Woods Grizzlies on December 3 and fell 50-34.

Katie Peck led the team in scoring, netting 12 points. Rhonnie Poyirer added nine, Makenzie Fairbanks five, and the following players each scored two points for the Vikings, Amery Oberg, Molly Quello, Kamryn Johnson and E Deschampe. Both Katie and Rhonnie had one three-pointer in the game.

For much of the first half the Vikings stayed close, but the second half the taller North Woods team used its height to pull away. Trailing 37-18 in the second half, the Vikings did manage to match the Grizzlies in points the rest of the way, but they couldn’t close the gap enough to make it close.

H. Cheney led North Woods with 15 points and H. Kinsey was right behind with 14.

Still, the Vikings fought hard and despite a big disadvantage in height, only trailed in rebounds 38 to 44. Cook County finished with nine steals to 15 for North Woods and the Grizzlies’ ended with a 36-shooting percentage to 30 percent for the Vikings.

The girls traveled to Northeast Range on Tuesday, December 7, and then will play a slew of away games before hosting the Ely Timberwolves on December 21.
