Cook County elections to have some races

Candidate filing closed Tuesday, May 31 at 5 p.m. and there were some surprises. In District 1, current representative Robert Svaleson chose not to put his name on the ballot. Instead, voters will pick between Yastrianne Spry or Debra White.

Stacey Hawkins, the District 2 Commissioner will run against David Berglund.

District 3 commissioner Dave Mills signed up and he will run unopposed unless there is write-in candidate.

Incumbent District 4 commissioner Ann Sullivan will be opposed by Theresa Luther-Dolan.

And in the race for the District 5 commissioner chair, two very familiar opponents will once again square off. Current Commissioner Ginny Storlie has defeated former District 5 commissioner Bruce Martinson by three votes and eight votes in the last two elections, and once again west end voters will have to decide between the two who will represent them in District 5.

Because there are only two candidates running in each district, there won’t be an August Primary election.

Running unopposed are Cook County Sheriff Patrick Eliasen, Cook County Attorney Molly Hicken, Cook County Recorder Dusty Nelms, and Cook County Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers.

In the election for the Soil and Water Conservation District, Gregg Westigard was the only one to sign up for SWDC District 1 and Stanley Tull is running unopposed in SWDC District 2.

Assuming they all stay in the race and there is no write in candidates, Gregg and Stan will serve their districts on the SWCD board.

No one signed up to run for the SWDC District 4 opening.
