The Cook County DFL would like to express our great appreciation to the Cook County Board of County Commissioners for your faithful review of the president’s executive order regarding settlement of refugees in our county.
Although some may see the issue as being one that does not fall properly within your purview, and although the ramifications of your decision may be seen by others as being inconsequential, or even undesirable, we believe the historical context is plain. In truth, no person, no country, no community can arbitrarily turn their backs on suffering children, women, and men without first defaulting to the characteristic passions and fears that have long haunted the collective conscience and hobbled the character of all humankind.
This is why your decision matters, why it advances our community, and why it has implications, and sends a message that goes far beyond our own corner of the world. CCDFL sees your vote in defense of refugees as an affirmation of decency, which speaks to the core of what it means to be truly American. We thank you for your leadership, your wisdom, and your compassion.
