Cook County cross country ski trails report

Snow, snow, snow. We’ve had a lot recently which bodes well for ski trails and skiers, but bundle up. Temperatures have plummeted to below zero for the highs and severe cold has limited some grooming.

. Sugarbush Trail: With an average depth of 12 inches, groomers have plenty of fresh snow to work with. The following trails were recently groomed: Hogback Loop, Wood Duck Loop, Piece of Cake Loop, Picnic Loop and Bridge Run. Onion River road has been groomed to intersection “X” and then back to the parking lot through “M” and “L”. The small loops out of the Britton Peak trailhead have been groomed, including Hogback. Details on groomed sections are at www.sugarbushtrail.org/ski-trails.php.

. Norpine Trails: Excellent packed powder conditions throughout system. Trails are all groomed and packed and in good to excellent condition. No cautions so enjoy!

. Central Gunflint Trail System: We’ve had lots of new snowfall lately, 7.5 inches over the last week. Frequent grooming has continued to fine-tune each trail; rougher trails have leveled out beautifully! With just over 40 inches of snowfall on the year now, we are only a half-inch shy of where we were last year on this date. All ski trails are open and are in great to excellent shape.

. Upper Gunflint Trail System: The entire trail system was groomed last week but there’s been much new snow in the area so grooming will continue. For more information call Gunflint Lodge (218) 388-2294. Gunflint Pines Resort (218) 388-4454, and Heston’s Lodge (218) 388-2243.

. Banadad Trail System: The entire trail system has been cleared and packed and is awaiting additional snow to continue tracking. Tracked trails include 10 km on Lace Lake, Tall Pines and Tim Knapp and 3 kilometers on the East end of Banadad.

. Grand Marais Area Trails: We received approximately 5 inches of new snow yesterday from this latest storm with a small amount of rain included yesterday morning. All trails have been compacted so skating lanes should be in good condition. We will be resetting classic tracks tonight and/or tomorrow depending on the weather. We now have a superb base for the remainder of the season. This includes: 3 K Cut Off, B&B Loop, Canyon Curves Loop, East Overlook Loop, Hilfiker Hill Loop, Lower Snowman Loops, North Advanced, Ole Hyvaa Loop, Pincushion Mountain Loop, Upper Snowman Loops, West Overlook Loop.
