Cook County Community Fund awards $11,427 in annual grants




The Cook County Community Fund, an affiliate fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, has announced that six grants totaling $11,427 were awarded to nonprofit organizations serving the Cook County area. Established in 2003, this year marks the eighth consecutive year of grant making for the Fund, which has awarded over $50,500 to date.

“Our board is very pleased to help out these groups that work hard to make Cook County a great place to live,” said Howard Hedstrom, board chair. “Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our community, we will grow this lasting resource to offer support for generations to come.”

Cook County Area Fund 2012 grants include: Grand Marais Arts Inc., $1,500 for programming technology support; Birch Grove Foundation, $1,750 for the Hearth Oven Bread Baking initiative team; Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association, $1,677 for the Summer Cinema; North Shore Health Care Foundation, $2,000 for art therapy for elders facing memory loss; Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, $2,500 for Acquisition of All- Season Rescue Sled; and Lutsen Junior Alpine Club, $2,000 for transitioning into an independent organization.

The Cook County Community Fund (CCCF) was created to enhance the quality of life for people in Cook County by attracting charitable gifts, making philanthropic grants, and providing responsible financial stewardship and community leadership. Cook County Community Fund board members are Howard Hedstrom, chair; Tracy Benson, Mike Carlson, Amy Demmer, Cindy Hansen, Karen Halbersleben, Richard Olson, Mary Petz, Ann Possis, and Sue Riley.
