With Cook County Commissioner Bobby Deschampe leaving his position so he can assume the position as Tribal Chair for the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the District 1 seat will soon be open.
So far only Clark Bloomquist has filed to run for the position. The filing period ends August 11, 2020, so there isn’t much time left to sign up if you want to run.
Deschampe announced his intention to resign as county commissioner following his primary win over Beth Drost on June 9. Because he achieved a majority (54 percent) vote in the primary he won’t face anyone in the general election.
Deschampe won a special election in 2017 over James Vannet to win the District 1 Cook County Commissioner seat vacated by Frank Moe who stepped down for health reasons.
In 2018, Bobby ran and won a four-year commissioner term outright. That will end early with his election and commitment to serve on the tribal council. Deschampe’s last day to serve as his district’s county commissioner representative will be August 21.
In order to find a replacement to fill Deschampe’s term, Auditor/Treasurer Powers said the special election will take place February 9, 2021.
