Murray the Moose drew the winning ticket Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Cook County Chamber Foundation’s effort to raise funds for the 2018 Great Place Project.
“We sold more than $17,000 in tickets,” said Jim Boyd, Chamber Foundation executive director. The foundation is the 501c3 charitable arm of the Cook County Chamber.
“After expenses,” Boyd said, “we should have about $12,000 to invest in the 2018 Great Place Project.”
The winning ticket, Boyd said, was held by Ron Wutchiett of Bloomington, Minn. The canoe will be delivered to Mr. Wutchiett this coming week.
Boyd said he was particularly grateful to those who helped develop and sustain this effort. He named Tyson Cronberg of Beaver House, who sold the majority of the tickets; Jack Stone of Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, who supplied the Langford canoe at cost; and Sarah Hamilton of Trail Center, who suggested the canoe raffle and provided timely advice.
Boyd said the Chamber Foundation now will seek grant opportunities in which the money raised by the canoe raffle might be used as a match, increasing the available Great Place Project funding for 2018 and beyond even more.
The Great Place Project is a joint effort of Sawtooth Mountain Clinic’s Moving Matters program and the Chamber Foundation to fund small proposals from businesses, groups and individuals for creating small great places around Cook County and the Grand Portage Reservation. Grants of up to $1,000 in 2017 were given to fund proposals for such efforts as public benches, including the bobber benches in front of Beaver House in Grand Marais, Little Free Libraries, a public paint-by-number mural for the wall of Birchbark Books and Gifts, and many more.
