Aaron Mielke with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Grand Marais station reminds residents that burning restrictions are set to go in effect on Cook County on April 2, 2012. Due to the mild winter and recent unseasonably warm temperatures, open burning restrictions are set to go on earlier than most years.
Once restrictions are in place permits will not be issued and they will remain on until sufficient greenup occurs to reduce the fire danger and risk of escaped fires.
Alternatives to burning should be considered and are available for yard debris disposal. See the Cook County FireWise website for more details on alternative disposal sites: www.co.cook.mn.us/index. php/firewise-home
When burning permits are being issued, they may be obtained from a local township fire warden, USFS office, or MN DNR Forestry office. All day variance permits are only issued by the MN DNR Forestry office. Call the MN DNR Forestry office at 387-3037 with any questions.
