The Cook County Highway department has updates on two bridge construction projects.
UT 46 Cross River Bridge Project
The existing timber bridge located on UT 46/N Gunflint Lake Road over Cross River is structurally deficient and the poorest rated bridge in the County. It is the ninth poorest rated bridge on the entire state of Minnesota’s local bridge system. The local system consists of every bridge that is not on the trunk highway system. The bridge will be replaced with a new timber bridge.
Redstone Construction was the low bidder at $1.4 million.
Per Cook County Engineer Robert Hass, “A temporary bypass will be constructed to maintain traffic flow across the bridge. The existing bridge will then be removed and the new one built exactly in its place.”
Construction began on July 5, 2022 and is expected to finish by Fall of 2022.
UT 71 Carlson Creek Bridge Project
The existing culvert located at UT 71/Moose Valley Road over Carlson Creek is structurally deficient and the second poorest rated bridge in the County. It is the thirteenth poorest rated bridge on the entire state of Minnesota’s local bridge system. The local system consists of every bridge that is not on the trunk highway system. A temporary bypass will be constructed to maintain traffic flow across the bridge. The existing bridge will then be removed and the new one built exactly in its place.
Ulland Brothers was the low bidder at $440,000.
“The structurally deficient steel culverts will be replaced with two concrete box culverts,” said Robert Hass, Cook County Engineer. “The culverts span a distance larger than 10-feet and are therefore considered a bridge and are a part of our bridge inventory list.”
Construction begins on July 11, 2022 and is expected to finish by mid-August of 2022.
Funding for the bridges comes from the Town Bridge account from the state. This is possible because the roads were redesignated as an Unorganized Territory (UT) road. For both projects, this new funding source helps offset costs that would have otherwise required funding from local sources.
