There is always good conversation with friends before, during and after the lunches at the Grand Marais Senior Center. Visiting recently before lunch were (L-R) Nona Smith, Gladys Anderson and Joyce Hagen.

The Senior Center will soon be getting some much-needed improvements. Smith Construction has been awarded the contract for all of our improvements. These improvements will include many much needed energy efficiency improvements. Soon we will have some new energy efficient windows, new entry doors (the old ones leak like a sieve), and insulation along our roofline walls and Director Bev’s office will finally become an insulated room!

We are also improving the handicap accessibility plus new flooring in our restrooms. We will have new exterior siding that won’t continuously blow off.

These improvements are made possible in part by the Cook County – Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) housing program through a grant program along with other private funding. We are excited and are looking forward to these new improvements.

I’d like to give a reminder of a service that could improve life for seniors at home. The Senior Center offers an Emergency Phone System Service. This service is available to everyone in Cook County that has a landline.

This is an interactive voice service with a 24-hour emergency response center. The phone comes with your choice of an emergency pendant or wristband. The rental cost is just $30 per month. This system does save lives—but only if you remember to always wear your pendant or wristband. You should even wear it in the shower!

This is a great way to provide additional security and safety for folks. It can also help enable folks to remain living safely on their own for a longer period of time. It also helps provide peace of mind for their family and loved ones. Please call the Senior Center for more information or to order your Emergency Phone System.

Two fun dates to remember in April—Monday, April 9 and Monday, April 23 are Casino Express Days. Leave the Senior Center at 9:45 a.m., return at approximately 3:30 p.m. The transportation is free! With the price of gas these days, how could you not take advantage of this great deal? Everyone, age 50 and older will also receive $10 in free slot play and $5 off a lunch entrée in the restaurant. Join us!

Every Thursday morning at the Senior Center we host open cribbage from 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. All levels of cribbage players are welcomed. Come once of come every Thursday! The cost is free! We hope you will join us soon for a fun and social morning of Cribbage.

And remember, the Cook County Senior Center is open and welcoming to all of all ages! News from the Cook County Council on Aging is provided by Kristen Anderson of the Grand Marais Senior Center. Kristen can be reached at (218) 387-2660 or via e-mail at CCCOA@boreal.org.
