Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) monitored ATV, boating, and angling activity. Time was spent maintaining station equipment and fielding calls about ATV use, BWCA and bear hunting. Remote lakes were checked, with anglers having limited success.

CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marais #2) spent the week working angling and boating activities. Time was also spent working at an AIS check station. Multiple violations were encountered, and enforcement action was taken. Equipment maintenance continues.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports finishing a background investigation throughout the week. Time was spent at Camp Ripley for a field training meeting. Hill hit the water and contacted anglers and recreational paddlers. The fishing bite was poor with bass dominating the bag. A boat-registration violation was handled.

CO Jim Guida (Brainerd) patrolled station lakes this week. A violation of a motorist pulling a watercraft on a public roadway with a drain plug was addressed. Guida fielded a call of a loon entangled in fishing line with a daredevil attached to its abdomen. A nuisance-bear report was taken where a bear was eating fruit off cherry trees in the forest and breaking limbs. A call of a juvenile picking up baby birds was investigated. Both of the bird chicks died. The youth was spoken to in the presence of his parent and was advised to leave wildlife in the wild. Follow up on a reported AIS violation has begun.

CO Stephen Westby (Little Falls) worked area lakes and rivers for boating and angling activities. Time was spent working with the Morrison County Sheriff ’s Office on an ongoing investigation with other local groups. Westby assisted at the Conservation Officer Academy at Camp Ripley training on boat operations, BWI investigations and active shooter situations. He received complaints of trespassing and took several phone calls about the upcoming deer archery season with the use of crossbows and questions about the deer feed ban that was lifted for Morrison County. Westby also attended the funeral for Fargo Police Officer Jake Wallin, who was ambushed while investigating a traffic crash. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

CO Derek Schneider (Zumbrota) responded to a boating crash on Lake Zumbro. An intoxicated boat operator struck a docked pontoon and nearly sunk their own watercraft due to a punctured hull. The operator was arrested for boating while intoxicated. No injuries occurred during the crash.

CO Dan Starr (Onamia) fielded a variety of calls this week, including invasive species and wolf depredation. Another calf was killed by wolves near Milaca, which is evidence that high numbers of wolves exist and their range has increased. ATVs causing damage in the road right-of-way was also addressed with MnDOT.

CO Jacque Hughes (Longville) found a missing 5-yearold, who was uninjured and safely returned home. Enforcement action was taken for no throwable, no fire extinguisher, and no license in possession.

CO Nicholas Prachar (Blackduck North) reports increased ATV activity throughout the area. Enforcement action was focused on ATV and AIS activity. Prachar responded with Beltrami County to a physical domestic that turned into a vehicle rollover about 5 miles away from the residence of the initial call.
