Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) monitored snowmobile activity on local trails and the North Shore State Trail. The snowmobile clubs have done a great job clearing all the trees and debris from past storms. He also spent time in the BWCAW checking trout anglers.

CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marias #2) spent the week in International Falls attending snowmobile training school. Ledeen and other new officers learned skills on how to effectively and safely patrol from a snowmobile, use RADAR detection for speeding, and life-saving winter survival skills.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports working a full week of background investigations. Hill conducted follow-up work on a trapping case and a few anglers were checked. They were having minimal luck.

CO Brittany Hauser (Red Wing) spent time patrolling area snowmobile trails for activity. Time was also spent assisting in the removal of multiple vehicles from the ice in an area where conditions quickly deteriorated, causing multiple vehicles to break through. In total, 16 vehicles had to be removed. Ten were driven off while six others were partially submerged and had to be removed via tow service. Enforcement action was taken for various snowmobile violations.

CO Mitch Boyum (Rushford) reports checking snowmobilers over the week. Compliance and use was high. Coyote hunters were also out and doing well. Numbers seem to be up a bit from previous years. A few trout anglers were out as well. Reports of vehicles falling through the ice on the Mississippi River were reported.
