Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) spent time checking anglers along the North Shore. He also attended training at Camp Ripley.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) took a report of illegal birch pole theft in the state forest. The suspect was located and stated he was just cutting a few trees to decorate his home. He did not know if he was cutting on state or private property and was unaware of Minnesota’s law regarding transportation of decorative forest materials. Manning also checked area Lake Superior tributaries and encountered a few drivers on back roads trying to get from point to point via still-snow-covered roads. Questions have also been fielded regarding the strong probability of ice-covered lakes this opener.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports checking Lake Superior tributary anglers throughout the week despite less-than-ideal angling conditions. A few anglers reported catching smaller steelhead and coasters, most of them coming from near the mouth of the river. Rain and warm weather towards the end of the week are going to fill the rivers. No violations were detected. Hill swapped out equipment for the year. Crescent Lake in Cook County had 34 inches of ice this week, so who knows what the walleye opener will bring.
