Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News- Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) checked anglers and snowmobile activity during the week.

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) worked anglers and patrolled GIA snowmobile trails. The officer also checked cross country skiers at Pincushion and folks are reminded to get their annual or three-year ski pass before arriving at the trailhead.

CO Kipp Duncan (Duluth East) assisted with a work detail in the Grand Marais area for the opening of the winter trout season in the BWCA.

CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) responded to a call of a snowmobile that had gone through the ice. The individual had driven into open water near a river outlet on the lake during low light hours. He was able to get himself out of the water and make his way to a lake home to get help.

CO Pilot Jason Jensen (Brainerd) reports flying fish shelter creek flights. During one flight, a snowmobile fire was found on an area lake. No riders were injured and the local officer investigated the cause.

CO Andrew Goodman (Elbow Lake) found a couple who left six lines down while they went to Christmas dinner. Upon return, they had a tangled mess from a quality walleye caught on the unattended lines.

CO Mark Fredin (Aurora) received a complaint of a bobcat in a foothold trap that was unattended. Upon checking the trap, the bobcat was removed/stolen by an unknown person and the trap owner was charged for not tending traps. Fredin also received a complaint of road hunting where a cabin owner hid a trail camera and obtained videos of a hunter with a crossbow urinating on the roadway. Never know what a camera will catch these days.
