CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) wrapped up a trapping case which resulted in a charge of failing to pull traps after the closed season. He delivered a family medical message to a bear hunter. A garbage burning complaint was followed up on and enforcement action was taken.
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) patrolled area lakes, trout streams and worked the opener of bear season. The bear hunters had good overall success during the opening weekend of the hunt. Enforcement action was taken for transport of an untagged big game animal, unsigned bait station and transport of a loaded firearm.
CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) encountered a boater near a campground after dark and asked why he was sitting there with no navigational lights on, to which he responded, “I’m drunk.” Enforcement action was taken.
CO Joyce Kuske (Little Falls) checked one boat that showed no registration on it and when asked, the boat owner said he had been using the boat for 15 years and never registered it. When asked to see a life jacket for him the boat owner seemed surprised and said, “I need one of those too?”
CO Tom Hemker (Winona) followed up on a dumping complaint where a person interviewed described the person who had dumped the trash as a pretty good guy but he had done time in a couple states out west and he may not tell the truth.
CO Kyle Quittschreiber (Blackduck) reports that two individuals were found to be in possession of 45 crappies and then 106 more crappie fillets were discovered. The statewide limit on crappies is 10 per licensed angler. All fish were seized and enforcement action taken.
CO Chris Vinton (Perham) investigated a TIP call where goose hunters were observed shooting a sandhill crane. A group was checked with 20 geese bagged, and after being told to bring officers to the crane they shot, they located a crane that all five in the group admitted to shooting at.

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News- Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
