Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) focused enforcement efforts on boating and angling activity. Time was spent educating boaters on AIS laws. Enforcement action was taken for insufficient number of PFDs, angling without a license, and failure to display watercraft registration.
CO Mary Manning (Hovland) helped teach at the current CO Academy and attended a planning meeting for upcoming training. The officer also took calls on fishing access, camping on public lands, nuisance beaver and a cougar sighting.
CO Kyle Quittschreiber (Blackduck) received a nuisance bear complaint from a resort owner on Upper Red. The resort owner stated that the bear had been visiting the Dumpster for the past couple weeks, but has recently discovered that the garbage outside the campers in the campground is a better place to look for a midnight snack.
CO Bill Landmark (Moorhead) reports that a young fawn was reunited with its mother after an individual brought it home and into his living room.
CO Marty Stage (Ely) had reports about a man carrying a deer fawn around. Officers located the man in Ely and he described how he found and kept the fawn. He thought he might be doing something illegal so he abandoned the fawn “to let the predators have it.” Officers tried to find the fawn, but were unable to locate it. Please leave the wildlife babies alone!
