Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) patrolled area snowmobile trails and trout lakes. The trails were busy with the warm weather this past weekend. Fish houses were monitored for litter as the removal date is fast approaching. Enforcement action was taken for snowmobile violations.

CO Hannah Cowden (Warroad) spent her time checking anglers and snowmobiles on Lake of the Woods and surrounding areas. One angler decided fishing was too slow, so he would try to increase his odds by using five lines. The angler, however, didn’t catch any extra fish and wasn’t happy when he received a citation.

WREO Joe Stattelman contacted a semi driver after he was seen throwing garbage out of his cab. The driver stated he was cleaning his truck out before returning to his home base in Fargo. Enforcement action was taken and the driver was observed picking up his garbage in the road ditch.

CO Tom Hemker (Winona) reports the river is opening up. He used an airboat to rescue two dogs that ventured out on ice into open water a couple hundred yards from the bank.

CO Tricia Plautz (Henning) come across what appeared to be a person trapped under a vehicle only to find it was a stuffed pair of jeans and boots.
