Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News- Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are lawabiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Mary Manning (Hovland) worked a wilderness patrol in the BWCA with CO Wahlstrom. The officer checked bear baits and handled calls about nuisance beavers and foxes.

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reports outdoor activity way down during the week. He checked bear guides, bear baits and responded to a trapped wolf from a wolf depredation complaint. The wolf appeared to be very old and too weak to hunt naturally so it began to target dogs, cattle and chickens. A remote BWCA patrol was done along with remote patrol along the Canadian border.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) worked a detail in the BWCA this last week with Officer Manning. The officer checked bear bait stations and monitored ATV activity.

CO Matthew Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) spent the week checking anglers and boaters on Lake Superior. Angler success on Lake Superior has been limited due to the weather, but success is increasing near Grand Marais. Officers responded to an injured raptor and discovered a red-tailed hawk struck by a vehicle. The hawk was transported to a rehabilitation center.

CO Bret Grundmeier (Hinckley) spent quite a bit of time issuing nuisance bear hunting permits for the removal of bear that have been destroying corn crops.
