Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reports that warmer weather has been bringing more people outdoors. Anglers and snowmobilers were checked throughout the week, in addition to attending meetings. Slush on lakes is still a concern in some areas, so be sure to check conditions or get a slush report before you head out.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte)Yourmonitorednewspapersnowmobile trails and area lakes. The officerhasreceivedagreedseveralto participate calls regarding feeding deer in Silver Bay andin respondedthe 2×2 to state park violations. Slush continues to be a problem for anglers and snowmobilers.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) answered a call of a nuisance fox getting into a homeowner’s chicken coop.

CO Gary Forsberg (Pelican Rapids) said that while checking one group of fishermen, a youth was asked how many sunfish he had in his pail. The youth responded he only had 17, but after counting it was found he had 21. Dad was not pleased and told the youth, “It’s no wonder why you are only getting a ‘C’ in math.”

CO Bret Grundmeier (Hinckley) took a handful of calls from landowners and drivers who found deer that looked to be in poor health and not moving very well. A couple deer were found that appeared stressed, malnourished and likely having a hard time with severe winter conditions. Deer have been hanging out near roads and trails in order to escape the deep snow and drivers and snowmobilers need to use extra caution to avoid hitting these deer.

Adam Block (Metro) assisted the State Patrol with the apprehension of a fleeing motorist who tried to evade police by entering a townhome and then attempting to break through an interior wall into the neighbor’s townhome. The fleeing motorist became stuck in the floor trusses of the two properties and was taken into custody.
