Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminderAdto all to safe and to follow the rules! D l be

CO Greg Abraham (New Ulm) made contact with the raptor
center regarding a young eagle that had blown out of a nest. Time
was also spent checking on a cougar complaint, and handling
“orphaned” animal complaints.
CO Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) checked two gill nets that were
reported with dead fish on Cass and Leech lakes. The nets were
found to have very old dead decaying fish, likely from early
spring or winter, and did not have the required identification.
The investigation will continue with the Leech Lake Band conservation officers.
CO Tom Hemker (Winona) reports heavy river traffic over the
holiday weekend and continues to assist Winona County in
searching for a drowning victim. He received a call of an unattended, floating boat on a day with high winds. He found the boat
with a person sleeping inside the boat. He was from California
and was floating from St. Paul to New Orleans and writing a
book. An eagle was taken to the eagle center in Wabasha after it
was found in brush. The tree its nest was in was blown over in a
wind storm.
