Conservation District to hold rain barrel and compost bin sale

Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding a rain barrel and compost bin sale in conjunction with the annual tree and shrub sale. Pre-orders will be due on April 14, 2017 and distribution will be on May 11, 2017.

As part of Cook SWCD’s commitment to conservation, we are pleased to announce this community conservation program to help reduce our impact on the local environment. Through April 14, 2017, conservation products will be available for special pricing. The Earth MachineTM Backyard Compost Bin, normally retails for $100, will be available for $48. This compost bin is approximately 33” high and 33” wide, made of 50 percent post consumer recycled plastic, comes with a “how-to” guide and has a 10-year warranty. With the Earth MachineTM, kitchen scraps and yard waste (grass and leaves) are easily composted into a nutrient-dense material to add to gardens, lawns or new plants.

Also available, the SYSTERN Rain Barrel can provide a household with 55 gallons of non-potable water that can be used in your backyard compost bin, garden or for any outdoor water use. Rain barrels reduce erosion and increase water quality by reducing the amount of storm water pollution to our nearby lakes and streams. The SYSTERN Rain Barrel is made of 50 percent post consumer recycled plastic and has a built in mosquito/debris screen, overflow hose and spigot for removing the water from the barrel. The SYSTERN Rain Barrel, which normally retails for $120, is available for $58.

Conservation trees and shrubs are available at $25 to $40 per bundle of bare-root plants. Choose from a variety of species, some of which are: black chokeberry, American cranberry bush, red-osier dogwood, ninebark, mountain ash, chokecherry, pin cherry, hazelnut, juneberry (serviceberry), staghorn sumac, paper birch, river birch, black cherry, red maple, sugar maple, bur oak, red oak, white oak, white cedar, balsam fir, jack pine, norway (red) pine, white pine, black spruce, white spruce, tamarack.

Order forms are available at the Soil & Water office or online at www.cookswcd.org. Order forms must be received by April 14, 2017 to take part in these valuable conservation programs. Contact the Soil & Water office at 218-387-3647 for more information.
