Conservation Corps crews tackle key state park projects

Conservation Corps Minnesota field crews are working to complete two key state parks projects by the end of June, in time for the North Shore’s peak tourism season. Both projects improve public access to popular Lake Superior sites.

In Cook County, the Ray Berglund State Wayside, located near the Temperance River, is being rehabilitated for more accessibility. The trail leading to the river has been realigned to create more sustainable grades. The parking area has been reconstructed and visitor amenities will be added, such as a toilet, picnic tables and benches. A Conservation Corps crew is currently constructing a stairway to the top of a 20-foot rock face, installing safety railings along the stairway and overlook and restoring natural areas at the wayside. The crew expects to complete their work by June 28, 2013.

The other project is the Shovel Point Overlook in Tettegouche State Park. Work to improve access to the shoreline and the overlook began in 2011 and continues there this summer. The crew expects to complete their work by June 30.
