Deer rifle season is over and with it, the Buck’s Hardware Big Buck Contest. The folks in the lead last week retained their positions— no one brought in bigger bucks, by weight or by antler spread ,so Jesse Whipkey and Ian Johnson took home the prizes.
Jesse Whipkey, formerly of Grand Marais, now living in Oscoda, Michigan, is the winner in the largest dressed weight category. Whipkey’s buck weighed in at 233 pounds. Whipkey wins a Remington 30-06 rifle.
In the largest antler spread category, Ian Johnson of Grand Marais took half the cash with his buck that had an awesome antler spread of 25.75 inches. Johnson claimed $2,085 in cash.
All of the hunters who entered the Big Buck Contest were in the running for the cash drawing. Laura Marxen of Grand Marais was the lucky hunter who received the rest of the cash–$2,085.
The contest ended on Sunday, November 18, but deer hunting continues with archery season still open until December 31. Muzzleloader season opens November 24 and runs until December 9.
Continued safe hunting, everyone!
