Buck’s Big Buck Contest ended Sunday, November 20 and the frontrunners in last week’s Cook County News-Herald were able to hold onto their first place positions.
Winning a new rifle for the largest deer by dressed weight is Gary Schlienz of Grand Marais with his buck which weighed 236 pounds.
Half of the prize money (from the $4,500 entry fees) goes to the largest antler spread. Frankie Rabold of Grand Marais won the antler spread division with his nice-looking buck with a 23-inch antler spread. Frankie receives $2,250.
The other half of the prize money is given out in a drawing of all hunters entered. The winner of $2,250 cash is Rusty Peterson of Grand Marais.
Hunters may no longer take part in the Big Buck Contest, but some are still out there trying to get a buck or two by bow or muzzle loader.
Muzzle loader season ends December 11. Archery deer season continues until December 31.
