In what could very well be the final season of golf at Cook County High School, the CCHS golf team has had a busy spring. Head Coach Scott Steinbach has done a terrific job of setting up a quality schedule and mentoring a young squad of quality golfers. Here is a look at the 2010 golf season to date.
Day One of the Polar
League Conference Meet
On April 28, the Vikings competed in one of the Polar League Conference meets at Cloquet Country Club. The conference meet consists of two days of competition spread throughout the season. Senior Kipp Sande played exceptionally well, shooting a round of 83 to tie for the lead after the first day. Sophomore Zack Twiest also shot well, finishing with a round of 92, which put Twiest in the top five. Other finishers for Cook County were Shane Billings (103), Aaron Carlson (109), and Troy LeBlanc (124). LeBlanc and Billings are both from Silver Bay but compete with the Vikings.
After the first day of competition, Esko/ Carlton was in first place with a team score of 361. Two Harbors was in second, just nine strokes back with a score of 370. The Vikings were in third with a score of 387 followed by Moose Lake-Willow River (389), and Wrenshall (509).
Erica Borson was the lone female finisher for Cook County. She shot a quality round of 129.
Dual Meet vs. Duluth East at Northland
On Wednesday, May 5, the Vikings traveled to the beautiful Northland Country Club to compete in a dual meet against Duluth East. In a very windy and rainy day, the Vikings played well. Kipp Sande led the Vikings with a round of 86. Twiest was just two strokes off Sande’s pace with a quality round of 88. Other scores for the Vikings were: Billings (95), Adam Feiock (109), Carlson (112), Max Simonowicz (125), and Erica Borson (128).
The guys improved their overall team score as they shot a 378. Duluth East had two teams competing that day, scoring 320 and 324 respectively.
Dual Meet vs. Duluth East
at Superior National
One week after facing Duluth East in Duluth, the Vikings took on the Greyhounds at their home course of Superior National at Lutsen on May 12. Sande finished third overall and led the Vikings with a round of 81. Twiest continued his solid play with a score of 87. Other finishers for the day were: Billings (95), Carlson (97), David Bergstrom (105), and Feiock (115).
The boys improved their overall team score for the second straight week with a round of 360. The Greyhounds’ two teams shot 325 and 330 respectively.
Erica Borson, Cook County’s lone female golfer at meets, shot her low round of the season with a great score of 113.
Northern Invite
at Giants Ridge
On Friday May 14, the Vikings traveled to Giants Ridge to play The Quarry course. This is a chance for golfers to play the course in which they will be competing during the Section tournament. The Northern Invite is a two-day event, but because of scheduling conflicts, the Vikings were only able to compete on Friday.
Cook County shot a higher score than usual, as The Quarry is a tough course, especially if you are not used to playing it. Sande led the team with a round of 91. Twiest was just one stroke back with a great round of 92. Billings shot 98 while Carlson shot a quality round of 110. LeBlanc shot 115 and David Hansen finished his first round of the season with a 122.
Final Day of the
Polar League Conference Meet
On May 19, the Vikings competed in the final day of the Polar League Conference championship at Superior National. Sande was tied for the lead coming into the final day of competition. Sande shot an 86 for a two-day total of 169 and managed to keep the lead to win the Polar League Conference’s individual title.
Twiest continued to impress as he shot the low round of the day with an outstanding round of 80. His two-day total of 172 earned him third place. The Vikings finished fourth behind Esko/Carlton, Two Harbors, and Moose Lake.
Triangular Meet vs.
Wrenshall & Two Harbors
On May 21, the Vikings faced off against the Wrens and Agates at Superior National. Cook County took top team honors with a score of 356. Two Harbors finished second with a total of 374 while the Wrens finished third with a total of 485. Sande finished first overall with a round of 83 while Billings finished third with a great round of 88. Other finishers were Carlson (92), Twiest (93), Simonowicz (99), Luke Fenwick (100), Bergstrom (103), LeBlanc (106), Andy Farley (112), Hansen (119), and Sterling Anderson (129).
