Every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer, making this disease the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. To help combat this deadly disease, in 2008 Como launched Project Pink and painted its highest volume propane delivery truck pink and pledged to donate a penny from every gallon delivered by the pink truck to the fight. The first year of the campaign, Como raised just over $9,000 and donated it to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.
Cook County volleyball players once again hosted a fun event called “Dig Pink,” a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society and the North Shore Health Care Foundation. The volleyball players raised $500. The junior varsity Viking volleyball team played Cook County Schools faculty and staff. Vikings varsity played a team of parents and alumni volleyball players. Pictured here is the team of parents (L-R, front) Bev Wolke, Nancy Leonard, Julie Donek. (L-R, back) John Morrin, Brad Rude, Jennifer Fagerman, Jaye Clearwater-Day, Jennifer Speck, Jennifer Sutton. It was all in fun and for a worthy cause, but in case anyone was keeping track—the varsity girls won both their games and the faculty/staff beat the JV team.
“One penny per gallon may not seem like a lot,” said John Heino, Como’s president and CEO, “but it adds up.”
Since Project Pink was launched, Como has raised almost $18,000 through fuel sales from the pink truck.
