On Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m., at Harbor Park in Grand Marais, community members from Cook County will gather for a “sibling march” as part of the March for Our Lives movement. The march is one of hundreds happening around the country planned by students and survivors of gun violence in communities big and small, in all 50 states. The national day of action will focus on calling for lawmakers to make students’ lives and safety a priority, and to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.
Denny FitzPatrick of Arrowhead Indivisible, said, “Community members and students from Cook County will rally with other concerned residents for a sibling march as part of the March for Our Lives movement to call on lawmakers to make students’ lives and safety a priority by passing common-sense gun safety legislation. Some residents are going to Washington, D.C. for the march. I’m looking forward to marching here as one of the 819 sibling rallies worldwide.
“It’s important to send a message to our political representatives to take action, to move beyond thoughts and prayers to enact actual policy change. Local students are bringing 17 pairs of shoes to display with the names of the students that died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
“On average, there are nearly 12,000 gun homicides a year in the United states. Minnesota does provide added protections beyond the federal law, but has not as yet closed the loopholes for background checks for all handgun sales. Join us on March 24 as the kids and families of March for Our Lives will take to the streets to demand that their lives and safety become a priority, and that we end gun violence in our schools and communities,” said FitzPatrick.
