Cook County High School seniors in the College Writing class have been looking to their future. After researching ethical dilemmas in different jobs, they plan to discuss their findings with the public in a presentation called “Careers and Controversy.” Students welcome the community to join them in a friendly debate on Monday, January 9, at 7 p.m. in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
Students started this college class by first investigating codes of ethics for various professions. Then they identified specific research questions each wanted to pursue. After analyzing sources and developing conflicting arguments, the students set forth conclusions in their research papers.
In an open forum, students welcome the public to discuss and debate with them the following research topics: Emily Jacobsen—Coaching to gender differences; Noah Roth— Personal privacy versus national security; Tarin Hanson—Withdrawal of life support; Julia Larsen—Severe trauma and life support; Sarah Toftey—Life support and assisted suicide; Brooke Sherer—Success in Native American social work; Molly Thomas—When to refuse a designing job; Hannah Vander Heiden— When to join the Armed Services; Jack Viren—Enculturation in mission work.
