Community gets lucky with great Playhouse offerings

At press time, the Luck o’ the Irish was smilin’ on the Grand Marais Playhouse because upcoming entertainment included a fabulous opportunity to see a professional dance company perform at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on Friday, March 9.

Zenon Dance Company, the professional modern and jazz dance repertory company, will perform at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. The company will perform four vibrant works from its 2011 repertory. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

Zenon Dance Company arrived Monday to hold classes for the community. Several local dance enthusiasts took advantage of the opportunity and had a great time. The visit from this inspiring dance group was sponsored by the Grand Marais Playhouse, North Shore Music Association, and Cook County Community Education.

Then the Playhouse gets ready to present Little Women, based on the book by Louisa May Alcott and adapted by Kristin Laurence. Performances are April 19 – 22 and April 26 -29. Tickets are $10, adults, and $5, students. The play is directed by high school senior Maria Nickolay and the cast includes Cailan Carpenter, Mara MacDonell, Sarah Larsen, Linnea Henrikson, Amy Henrikson, Diane Stoddard, Janet Healy, Adrianna Berglund and Yvonne Block. The play begins that memorable Christmas when Marmee leaves to visit her sick husband and Jo sells her beautiful hair to help finance the trip. It ends just a year later when the happy family is again preparing to celebrate not only Christmas but also the return of Mr. March. In between these two events, we again live, laugh, love and cry with Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth as they go through the many trials and tribulations that have made this story a classic.

Rehearsals are also about to begin for Lethal Lecture by Craig Sodaro. The Playhouse’s first mystery dinner theater will be performed at the Harbor Light Supper Club June 28 – July 1 and July 5-8. The cast includes Kevin Kager, Gerry Grant, Tina Kraus, Sarah Stover, Stefanie Mitchell and Jack Nickolay.

Lethal Lecture follows the follies of Polly Peabody. Every time Polly’s in charge of something, it’s murder—literally! In this hour-long play, she’s program chairperson for Professor Hazelton Crandall’s presentation, Journey Through the Pharaoh’s Tomb. Unfortunately, the poor professor needs his own tomb before Act I ends, because he’s murdered. Miss Peabody narrows the suspects to four: the professor’s estranged wife, who wants to sell the artifacts; the professor’s vivacious, if vacuous, girlfriend; his longtime colleague and friend; and a reporter who’d do anything to get a story and keep his job.

The clues in this mystery dinner theater are right in front of the audience, and Miss Peabody begs for help in solving the crime. The suspects don’t waste time trying to pin the murder on each other by getting audience members to re-enact hilarious scenes of passion and deceit on the recent journey through the tomb.

More details on the dinner will follow soon. Mark your calendar— this is gonna be fun!

And this just in! Monroe Crossing will return to Grand Marais September 22 at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $15, adults, and $7, students (18 and under). At the door $20, adults, $10, students. All seating will be reserved, so pick your seats today.
