On Friday, March 29, members of a number of local churches gathered for the annual Community Cross Walk and Good Friday Service. The cross procession began at St. John’s Catholic Church and wove through Grand Marais with stops at churches along the way. At each stop a prayer was said for that congregation. Additional stops were made at the east and west sides of Grand Marais, asking blessings for the churches in the outlying areas of the county.

People joined the walk along the way—elders, single people, family groups—until the number following the cross was 40 strong.

After the walk, community members gathered at the Evangelical Free Church for a community service. Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church led the service and Pastor Mark Ditmanson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church gave the sermon.

At the end of the service, everyone slowly dispersed, solemnly considering the meaning of Good Friday and looking forward to a joyful Easter to follow.
