. Veteran recognition in Grand Portage

American Legion Post 2009, 8495 East Highway 61, Grand Portage, will be hosting a gathering. The event will begin with a drum ceremony at 10:30 a.m., a flag raising at 10:45 a.m., and a moment of silence at 11 a.m. Curtis Gagnon will give a brief address and all are then invited to enjoy refreshments at the Legion Post.

The event is sponsored by Grand Portage Legion Post 2009, the Sons of the American Legion and Post 2009 American Legion Auxiliary.

. Cook County High School Veterans Day Concert

Community members are invited to join School District 166 as the school celebrates Veterans Day and honors our veterans with a concert at 2 p.m. in the varsity gym.

The Cook County Student Councils will also once again be collecting pre-packaged cookies and cash donations for troops during the Veterans Concert.

. Community special offerings for veterans

The Cook County Community YMCA invites veterans and military families to visit the YMCA free all week long, from Monday, November 9 to Sunday, November 15.

Veterans can begin their membership at the Y for $0 enrollment all year long. Also, any active military families can receive a 20 percent discount on membership with a military ID. It’s easy to sign up at the Member Service Desk.

YMCA Director Emily Marshall said, “We thank all the veterans and their families in our community for their service and sacrifice for our country.”

As a way to say thanks, Gene’s Foods in Grand Marais is offering free soup and sandwiches to veterans for Veterans Day. Visit the deli between 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. for a free dinner.

And not just on Veterans Day, but every day, My Sister’s Place restaurant in Grand Marais offers a free meal for active duty service members. Just show your active duty military ID and your meal is free, with thanks from My Sister’s Place.
