After looking at plans to build either an 8,000-squarefoot or 10,000-square-foot daycare addition to the Cook County Community Center the community center board voted 4-1 against the proposal.
Estimated costs to build either proposal, one on the front or one at the back of the building, ranged from $1.6 million to $2 million.
The vote came at the board’s Monday, August 21 meeting.
Cook County commissioners will make the final decision to add childcare space to the facility, but the county board usually follows the recommendation of its volunteer boards.
While the community center board nixed the child care center, it did request bonding for renovations to the existing building, bathrooms, kitchen expansion, playground, hockey rink, compressors, LED lighting, etc. The county board will consider those requests shortly because the commissioners are in the midst of setting the 2018 levy.
The Cook County Community Center building has been in need of repair for some time, and the playground is in need of refurbishing, so it’s likely the county will opt to bond for some of these improvements.
