Cook County Historical Society
“Small Talk” on Mineral Center
Nelda Westerlind of Grand Marais will be giving a Cook
County Historical Society “Small Talk” about the once
thriving community of Mineral Center on May 18 at 10
a.m. at the Johnson Heritage Post.

Sarah Stonich at Grand Marais Public Library
Sarah Stonich, author of internationally acclaimed
novels These Granite Islands, The Ice Chorus, Shelter
and her much-anticipated Vacationland, will be at the
Grand Marais Public Library Monday, May 20, 3:00
p.m. This event is funded in part with money from
Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

“Art in the Garden”
Cook County Community Center, Saturday, June 1.
The morning sessions from 8:15 a.m. until noon will
include Garden Yoga , Garden Art for the Heart & Soul
and Landscape Art. The afternoon session will be from
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and you can choose 1 of 4 “make &
take” garden art projects: hypertufa, stained glass,
mosaic flower pot, metal garden art. Art Colony Silent
Auction of garden art pieces. To pre-register before

Cook County Board of Commissioners
Special Meeting
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cook
County Community Center. With the retirement of
Personnel Director Janet Simonen, commissioners are
soliciting public input regarding whether to replace
the position with a county coordinator or county
administrator. Citizens are invited to attend this public
forum and offer their thoughts and suggestions.

Sawtooth Mountain Clinic Foot Care Clinic
The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Cook County
Department of Public Health & Human Services offer
their Foot Care Clinic at the Grand Marais Senior Center
on the third Tuesday of each month, from 9:00-11:00
a.m. First come, first served. The cost is $10. Bring your
own soap, towel, and bucket to soak your feet.

Blood Pressure and Glucose Screening
The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Cook County
Department of Public Health & Human Services will be
offering Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar screenings on
Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Chicago Bay Marketplace
in Hovland from 8:00-9:00 a.m. and at the Senior
Center from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Blood pressures are free
and blood sugars cost $3. For more information please
