“Best job I ever had!” That’s how County Commissioner Jim Johnson described his experience on the county board as county employees and community members recognized him and Commissioner Fritz Sobanja for their years of service to the county at a reception at the courthouse December 18.

Johnson encouraged other community members to run for commissioner, saying it’s not as hard as people might fear. Johnson started his career as a schoolteacher and then became co-owner of Johnson’s Foods in Grand Marais. He was elected after selling his share in the business.

“This has been the most incredible learning experience,” Commissioner Sobanja said. He said some county commissioners throughout the state are experts in some areas because of the research they have done on behalf of their counties.

“I’m not going to say this is the best job I’ve ever had,” Sobanja said, “because I’ve liked my jobs.” He has worked as a construction contractor and carpenter and as a chef and has a new job lined up in the construction industry.

“Sure, I’m going to miss it,” Commissioner Sobanja said. “I’m not going to cry because it’s over; I’m going to be happy because it happened.”

At the end of their last meeting in office, Sobanja told his fellow commissioners, “It’s really been a wonderful experience in my life to be working with you all. I love you all!”

“Thank you guys!” Commissioner Johnson said. He will go back into retirement in January.

Both Johnson and Sobanja served as commissioners for two consecutive four-year terms. Replacing Johnson will be Heidi Doo-Kirk, and replacing Sobanja will be Garry Gamble.
