After getting population demographics back from the 2010 U.S. Census, Cook County is ready to look at the possibility of redistricting some of its county commissioner districts. On March 14, 2012, county Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers told the News-Herald that Commissioner Jan Hall may not have to run to keep her position as was recently speculated.
“There was a change in the district population numbers when we pulled them into the mapping software,” Powers said. “District 2 [Fritz Sobanja’s] is now more short than originally reported by the demographer’s office and District 1 [Jan Hall’s] does not exceed the average as much as they originally reported to us.
“We double-checked with the state demographer and the Secretary of State’s Office and they confirmed the new numbers. District 1 [Jan Hall] may not have to run again because of redistricting. We may just have Districts 2 [Fritz Sobanja] and 4 [Jim Johnson] on the ballot as originally scheduled {because their terms are up} depending on what changes the board approves.”
Auditor-Treasurer Powers has a county map on which he is proposing new district lines. Once the county board approves changes, a public hearing will be held.
