Comments wanted on Lake Superior – Poplar River Water District Project

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comments on an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) prepared for a project to create a public rural water district and the construction of a water pipeline and water appropriation from Lake Superior to provide potable and raw water to residential, commercial, and government customers within the district. One of the primary purposes of the water pipeline is to provide water for snowmaking operations at Lutsen Mountains Ski Hill.

The EAW was published in the June 11, EQB Monitor. Public comments on the assessment will be accepted during the 30-day public review period, which runs through 4:30 p.m. on July 11. Written comments must be submitted to: Randall Doneen, EAW project manager, DNR Ecological Resources Division, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4025.

Electronic or email comments may be sent to environmentalrev.dnr@state.mn.us with “Poplar River Water District EAW” in the subject line.

People should include a name and mailing address if they submit comments electronically. Written comments may also be sent by fax to 651- 297-1500.

A copy of the EAW is available online at www.mndnr.gov. (Click on “Public Input,” then select “Poplar River Water District EAW” from the scroll-down list under “Environmental Review.”) Additional copies may be requested by calling 651-259-5156.

A copy of the EAW is also available for public review at the Grand Marais Library, 104 2nd Avenue West, Grand Marais, MN 55604.
