Living in Grand Marais I’ve learned some things about mining. Mining provides us jobs, and it’s good for our economy. The people I know that work at the mines are good people, and many of them hunt and fish and care about our environment. The other thing I know is that you can never trust the company.
When we’ve been burned by mining companies so many times before, I don’t understand why our legislators are trying to take away my right to have a say on mining going on in my back yard. The legislature is trying to eliminate contested case hearings, which is where we get to comment and testify on these mining permits. I want to know that it will be safe to drink out of my tap, and that these giant tailings ponds aren’t going to poison me and my neighbors.
I pray that the legislature doesn’t ignore the lessons we have already learned.
