Come cheer your Vikes this fall

Cook County High School (CCHS) athletes are now preparing for a busy season of fall sports. Below are times and dates of the volleyball and football games, and cross country meets.

Football

The varsity football team has eight games this season, not including playoffs. First up is an away match against Onamia on September 1, with the kick-off at 6 p.m.

Next, Silver Bay comes to Grand Marais on September 8 for the Vikings’ 7 p.m. home opener.

Two away games, one played September 15 at Northeast Range, and the second at North Woods on Friday, Sept. 22 precede the Vikings’ next 7 p.m. home game scheduled for Friday, Sept. 29 against Floodwood. Ely Timberwolves come town on Friday, Oct. 6 and then the Vikings travel to face Mountain Iron-Buhl on Friday, Oct. 13. The Vikings end their regular season of play at home against South Ridge on Wednesday, Oct. 18 with a 5 p.m. start.

Cross Country Running

The cross country team opens its season with a home meet at Pincushion on August 31 at 3 p.m. Come out and watch the kids run the rugged Pincushion Mountain trails against the likes of the Duluth East squad who typically brings more than 100 runners to the event.

The team travels to Eveleth- Gilbert on Saturday, Sept. 14, then to Milaca on Sept. 23 to compete in the largest high school cross country meet in America.

On Sept. 28 the team will compete in Hibbing, and on Saturday, Oct. 7 the kids will run the hills at the Swain cross country meet in Duluth.

On October 11 the North Shore Storm will host the Polar League conference meet at Pincushion. Runners toe the line at 1 p.m.

The last two meets of the season will be at Proctor on Tuesday, October 17, and Cloquet on October 26, where the Section 7A meet is held. Runners or teams advancing from the section meet will travel to the state championships held the next week in Northfield.

Volleyball

Volleyball has its usual hectic schedule. Will the Vikings make it to the state tournament for a third straight time?

The Vikings open with Duluth Marshall on August 29. This game, like all home games, starts at 6:30 p.m. This home opener should give both teams a good idea of where they are and what they need to improve.

On Thursday, Aug. 31 the team travels to Barnum and then it’s off to Esko on Thursday, September 7 to face the always-tough Eskimos.

On Tuesday, Sept. 12 Mountain Iron-Buhl comes here, and on Thursday, Sept. 14 Moose Lake- Willow River will also pay the Vikings a visit in back-to-back home games.

The next five games are away. On Thursday, Sept. 21 the Vikings play South Ridge and the next two days play against multiple opponents in the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse tournament. On Monday, Sept. 25 the Vikings head to Proctor to play the Rails and then play Lakeview Christian Academy (LCA) in Cotton. LCA doesn’t have a home gym, so games are always played on a neutral court.

Two Harbors Agates travel to Grand Marais on Thursday, Set. 28 and two days later the Vikings travel to Two Harbors to play in a tournament.

Viking volleyball fans will get a great chance to watch their team play over the next four home games. Coming here to face the Vikings on Oct. 2 is North Woods; Silver Bay plays us the next day with Carlton coming to CCHS on Thursday, Oct. 5; and finally, the Floodwood Polar Bears come to town on Monday, Oct. 9.

The Vikings travel to Wrenshall to test the Wrens on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and then come home for their last regular season game to compete against the always-tough Cromwell Cardinals. Then it’s off to the playoffs. Will the Viking volleyball team make state once again? Stay tuned.
