Jackson Nickolay earns Northwestern honors

Jackson Nickolay of Hovland has been named to the fall 2010 dean’s list at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Jackson is a freshman majoring in theater.

The dean’s list includes students who achieved a semester grade-point average of 3.50 or above while carrying a minimum of 12 graded hours. In all, 438 students earned academic distinction.

Jack was an intern at the Grand Marais Playhouse and a recipient of the 2010 Playhouse college scholarship.

Sobleck graduates Concordia College

Among the students participating in the Concordia College commencement on Friday, December 17, 2010, was Ellen Sobieck of Grand Marais. Sobieck majored in biology and minored in chemistry.

Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering 78 majors, including 18 honors majors, and 12 pre-professional programs. Concordia is located in Moorhead, MN.

Ellen is a 2007 graduate of Cook County High School. She is the daughter of Harvey and Bridget Sobieck of Grand Marais.

Holmen named to UW-Madison dean’s list

Drew Farrington Holmen of Grand Marais has been named to the fall 2010 dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Holmen, a 2010 graduate of Cook County High School, is the son of Jim Holmen and Rita Plourde of Grand Marais. He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.

Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean of their college at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the honor.

Sommer Smith named to dean’s list

Sommer Smith of Grand Marais has been named to the fall 2010 dean’s list at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Sommer received congratulations from Michael C. Jordan, Ph.D, director of undergraduate academic affairs, who wrote, “Congratulations for the level of excellence you have achieved. Your dedication to learning is made evident by your work in the classroom and I hope you continue to find your studies to be challenging and fruitful.”

Sommer is a 2008 graduate of Cook County High School. She is the daughter of Scott Smith and Kristine Barton of Grand Marais.

In order to achieve dean’s list honors, a student needs to attain a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher at the end of the semester, and take at least 12 credits for regular grades.

Leah Laky earns dean’s list honors

Leah Laky of Grand Marais, daughter of Mark and Laura Laky, has been named to the fall 2010 dean’s list at Trinity Christian College. Leah is a 2009 Cook County High School graduate.

Students at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., must be enrolled full time and earn a minimum 3.5 grade-point average to be recognized on the dean’s list.

Kristen Bockovich will student teach in Bemidji

A Grand Marais student is among 64 Bemidji State University students who will spend time this spring in area elementary, middle and secondary schools participating in student teaching and internship assignments.

Kristen Bockovich, a senior in elementary education, will be teaching fourth grade at Bemidji’s Horace May Elementary School with Andrea Martin. Kristen is the daughter of Dale and Linda Bockovich of Grand Marais, and is a 2006 graduate of Cook County High School.

The student teaching program at Bemidji State provides education majors an opportunity to earn the valuable classroom experience they need to be a successful educator. The program is designed to place students in a public school classroom under the supervision of an experienced mentor teacher. For many of these 64 students, the student teaching assignment is the final step in the completion of their undergraduate teaching degrees at Bemidji State.
