Christina ‘Tina’ Deschampe

Deschampe graduates University of Minnesota School of Law

Christina ‘Tina’ Deschampe has graduated from University of Minnesota School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree.

Graduation ceremony was held on May 15, 2010 at the University of Minnesota. Tina received her bachelors degree in 2007 in Criminal Justice from Hamline University.

Tina is the daughter of Norman and Debbie Deschampe of Grand Portage. She is a 2003 graduate of Cook County High School.

Locals named to UMD spring dean’s list

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has announced its dean’s list for spring semester 2010, and a number of local students have earned the honor.

Included are Alexander
S. Hegg,
School of Fine Arts; Micaella G. Kinzli, College of Liberal Arts; and Benjamin R.
Nelson,
Science and Engineering.

To be named to the dean’s list, students must achieve a gradepoint average of 3.5 or higher.

Erin Lunde named to dean’s list

Erin Lunde, a senior at Luther College, has been named to the 2010 spring semester dean’s list. In all, 775 students achieved the honor.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades (A, B, C, D).

There were 197 seniors named to the dean’s list, 188 juniors, 200 sophomores and 190 first-year students.

Jessica Nelson earns St. Scholastica honors

Jessica Nelson of Grand Marais has been named to the 2010 spring semester dean’s list at the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth. Students named to the dean’s list must earn a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.

Nelson is a 2007 Cook County High School graduate and has just completed her junior year at St. Scholastica. She is a nursing major.

 

 

Jessica is the daughter of Tom and Patty Nelson of Grand Marais.

Terry graduates from the University of St. Thomas

Katelyn Terry, daughter of Dennis and Cathy Terry of Grand Marais, graduated cum laude from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul on May 23. Commencement exercises were held at O’Shaughnessy Stadium, followed by a presidential reception on the lower Quad.

Katelyn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in psychology and justice and peace studies.

She is currently working at the Frazier Academy in Minneapolis. In the fall she will be entering the graduate program in clinical psychology at Argosy University, Twin Cities in Eagan, MN.

Katelyn is a 2006 graduate of Cook County High School.

Victor Baculad Bohnen
received an Associate in Applied Science, Natural Resource Law Enforcement. He is the son of Nonie Bohnen and Bill and Dawn Daniels Bohnen, and is a 2005 Cook County High School graduate.

Gregory Clemence Gresczyk
earned a Diploma of Occupational Proficiency, Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance. He is the son of Carline and Pete Gresczyk of Grand Marais, and is a 2008 graduate of CCHS.

Brennan James Hawkins
earned a Diploma of Occupational Proficiency, Welding and Fabrication. He is the son of Scott Hawkins and Stacy Hawkins of Grand Marais. He graduated from CCHS in 2009.

Benjamin Job Larson
was awarded an Associate in Applied Science, Natural Resources Technology, and graduated with Honors. He is the son of Lisa Larson and Marlo Larson of Grand Marais. He is a 2005 graduate of CCHS.

Lori Backlund earns master’s degree

Lori Backlund of Grand Marais has earned her Masters of Science in Operations Management from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan.

Gabriella Sliwinska graduates from LSU

Gabriella Sliwinska graduates from LSU

Backlund entered the degree program while living in Michigan and finished in Grand Marais with Kettering’s distance learning program, by working with Cook County Higher Education.

Kettering University, founded in 1919, has long been a leader in the preparation of technical and managerial leaders for industry and society and is a national leader in professional co-operative education. It is the only co-op school in the country that sends its entire student body into professional co-op jobs. Income from the co-op term is a significant resource to help pay college expenses.

Backlund is currently employed as the Payroll & Benefits Administrator at Cook County School District 166.

Taryn Logan awarded scholarship

Cook County High School 2010 graduate Taryn Logan of Grand Portage has been awarded the Arnold and Evelyn Flaten St. Olaf Workcamp Scholarship. Taryn is the first recipient of a financial grant (of $8,500) from this endowment, which was established in 2004 by Drs. Edna and Howard Hong.

The Hongs designated the endowment for Trinity Lutheran Church students who choose to attend faith-based St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Taryn begins campus life at the college this fall.

The Flaten Scholarship Fund carries historic linkage to the building of the current Trinity Lutheran Church. Ham Muus recalled that St. Olaf work camp students joined Hovland volunteers in crafting an inspiring sanctuary some 60 years ago. “Professors Flaten and Hong provided dynamic leadership, both in design and development of this unique project. Trinity brings a highly valued presence and spiritual dimension to the entire area.”

Hong family members and supportive friends of Trinity Church continue to contribute to this important St. Olaf college scholarship endowment. Muus said, “We are proud to honor Taryn Logan through this historic legacy.”

Gabriella Sliwinska graduates from LSU

Gabriella Sliwinska graduated with the degree of Juris Doctor and a diploma in Civil Law cum laude from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on May 28, 2010.

Sliwinska is a 2004 graduate of Cook County High School, and a graduate with distinction from the University of Minnesota. She is currently working in a law firm in Baton Rouge and studying for the Louisiana bar exam.

She is the daughter of Grace and Peter Jacek.
