Rauzi named to the University of Minnesota dean’s list

Joseph Rauzi, a junior from Grand Marais enrolled in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, was named to the 2016 fall dean’s list.

To qualify for dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66- point grade average.

Murray named to dean’s list

Alex Murray, Grand Marais, was named to the academic high honor list for the 2016 fall semester at Minnesota State University.

Among 3,282 students, a total of 812 students qualified for the high honor list by achieving a 4.0 straight “A” average, while 2,470 students earned a 3.5 to 3.99 average to qualify for the honor list.

McMillan named to dean’s list

Magdalyn (Maggy) Rosa McMillan, Grand Marais, qualified for the St. Cloud State University spring dean’s list.

To be eligible for the honor, students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Maggy is studying in the School of Health and Human Services, Social Work.

James inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Cheryl James of Grand Portage is one of 24 new members to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Alpha Phi Upsilon Chapter. She was inducted during an annual recognition ceremony held on April 20 at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.

The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programs. At Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, members must initially achieve and then maintain a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average in college courses, demonstrate involvement in campus activities, and accept a leadership role in student organizations.

Andrew Thompson completes second year of studies

Andrew Thompson, a 2015 Cook County High School graduate, has completed his second year at the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota where he continues as a Dean’s Scholar in the College of Biological Sciences.

In addition to core studies, in his first year Andrew worked at the direction of Dr. Tzagaratis and Dr. Pellizzer at the Minneapolis VA Brain Center examining Magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from a clinical impulsivity study.

Recently, a neurology symposium was hosted by the U of M where a project studying chronic drug use was presented by Brian M. Sweis, M.D./Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Neurology. The study examined how drug use and relapse affected valuation in making decisions and employed optogenetic neuromodulation. Andrew received his first formal research citation for his efforts in the project.

Andrew will continue his studies this summer and will volunteer as an intern at the Hennepin County Medical Center. He is the son of proud parents Susan and Kevin Thompson of Grand Marais.
