Local student on 2017 Bemidji State University baseball team
Anyone following Cook County High School baseball over the last couple of years won’t be too surprised to learn that Owen Anderson, a hard-hitting center fielder with excellent range in the outfield and a great arm, has made the Bemidji State University baseball team.
Anderson is one of 38 student-athletes competing on the Bemidji State University baseball team this year under the direction of 11th-year head coach Tim Bellew.
Anderson, a freshman majoring in economics, is an outfielder on this year’s squad.
Bemidji State’s season gets under way Feb. 22 against Upper Iowa and Feb. 23 against the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The Beavers are scheduled to play their first home game March 29 against Concordia University-St. Paul.
Bemidji State University is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
Shannon O’Phelan on dean’s list
Shannon O’Phelan, daughter of Mike and Maureen O’Phelan of Lutsen, qualified for the University of St. Thomas dean’s honor list for the fall 2016 semester.
Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the end of the semester in which they have taken at least 12 credits for regular grades in order to qualify for the dean’s list.
Elizabeth O’Phelan selected for UMD scholarship
Scott Schulz, director of undergraduate recruitment at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), has notified Elizabeth O’Phelan that she was chosen to receive the University of Minnesota Duluth Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship for an outstanding entering transfer student.
This scholarship has a total value of $4,000 and will be awarded to Elizabeth for the fall of 2017 in equal installments over four semesters of undergraduate study.
The Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship is renewable each year subject to the student maintaining a 3.0 University of Minnesota cumulative grade point average and successfully completing 30 credits annually and full-time degree-seeking status at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Elizabeth O’Phelan is the daughter of Maureen and Mike O’Phelan of Lutsen.
Chmelik named to dean’s list
Joey Chmelik of Grand Marais has been named to the St. Olaf College dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester.
The dean’s list recognizes students with a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4-point scale.
Joey is biology major at St. Olaf. He is the son of Michael and Teresa Chmelik.
Hay named to dean’s list
Brenna M. Hay, daughter of John and Mary Hay of Grand Marais, was named to the fall 2016 semester dean’s list at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul.
The dean’s list includes full-time students with a grade point average (GPA) during the semester of 3.65 (out of 4.0) or higher.
Northwestern is a nondenominational Christian university. With a biblical worldview integrated into all programs, UNW provides a unique educational experience for students who want to combine faith and education.
Hay, a theater major, earned high honors for the fall semester.
