Everson named captain of UM-Morris football team

Colin Everson, a 225-pound senior defensive end for the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars, has been named one of the team’s football captains for the 2016 season.
As a junior Colin played in 10 games, leading his team with 13 tackles for a loss, recording a team-high 7 sacks, and tallied 52 total tackles. He even rushed the ball once, gaining 11 yards on his lone carry.
For his efforts the hard working Everson was named the 2015 Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year for the Cougars.
This season Colin scored his first collegiate touchdown in the Cougars’ 33-28 opening win against the Greenville Panthers. The TD came early in the fourth quarter on a play where he forced a fumble, picked it up, and ran it in from 35 yards in front a cheering home crowd.
A 2012 graduate of Cook County High School who earned numerous All-Conference honors in football and basketball, Colin has continued his excellent play in college. He is majoring in math and secondary education and getting a minor in coaching.
Colin is the son of Mitch and Cindy Everson, Grand Marais.
Two local students among UW-Stout grads
Two Grand Marais students are among the spring 2016 graduates from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis.
Ashley Deschampe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health wellness and fitness. She is a 2012 graduate of Cook County High School.
Katherine Vander Heiden earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Katie is a 2013 Cook County High School graduate.
UW-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, has 48 undergraduate majors and 23 graduate programs, including one doctoral degree. Established in 1891, UW-Stout prides itself on the success of its students in the workplace, with an employment rate at or above 97 percent for recent graduates.
