Johnson named to Central Lakes College dean’s list
CoLee Johnson of Hovland has been named to the fall semester 2009 dean’s list at Central Lakes College.
CoLee is majoring in heavy equipment operation and has qualified for the “Fast Track” program by being in the top 10 in his class. The designation means CoLee will be done with college at the end of July 2010 and will then begin an internship.
CoLee is a 2009 graduate of Cook County High School. He is the son of Kathy and Rusty Johnson of Hovland.
2 local students earn degrees from Bemidji State
Kenneth Bockovich and Trisha Olson of Cook County were among 227 students completing undergraduate degree requirements at Bemidji State University at the conclusion of the 2009 fall semester.
Kenneth Bockovich received a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies. He is a 2005 Cook County High School graduate and is the son of Dale and Linda Bockovich of Grand Marais.
Trisha Olson earned a BFA in creative and professional writing and graduated cum laude. She is the daughter of Greg and Mary Olson and is a 2005 graduate of Cook County High School.
Located in north central Minnesota, Bemidji State University enrolls over 5,000 students in over 65 programs on the undergraduate level.
Hovland student at “Scholarship Day”

Jackson Nickolay of Hovland was among 280 outstanding high school students to participate in a Northwestern College Scholarship Day recently. Jackson is home-schooled.
The students were involved in interviews and a writing competition in January and February. Northwestern College faculty, staff and students evaluated them on the basis of their potential for academic success, leadership and effective Christian service.
The participants were students who had already qualified for Northwestern College honor scholarships and were competing for additional funding from Presidential or Collegiate scholarships. The top six Presidential Scholarship winners will be designated Norman Vincent Peale Scholars and receive $60,000 over four years of study at Northwestern.
Vallen Cook participates in Northwestern service project

Vallen Cook of Grand Portage, a freshman at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, is among approximately 200 students who will travel across the U.S. and the world for the college’s annual Spring Service Projects March 6-15.
This year, one of the work projects includes a wilderness experience with local youth in Grand Portage. Other U.S. service opportunities are in Arkansas, Kentucky, New York, Texas and New Orleans. There is one new Spring Service Projects site in the United States: The college is partnering with Carey Christian Center in Cary, Mississippi, where students will tutor children, lead Bible studies, help families with emergencies, and assist with a dental clinic.
Northwestern College mission teams will travel to two international sites this year as well, serving in two youth hostels in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and in the impoverished area of Bluefields, Nicaragua.
Vallen is majoring in computer science.
