Cochrane earns MBA in design strategy
Andrew Fitts Cochrane received a master’s of business administration in design strategy degree from California College of the Arts in San Francisco on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
The unique MBA in Design Strategy program unites design and integrative thinking, sustainability and systems thinking, finance, and leadership into a holistic framework.
Andy graduated from Cook County High School in 2006 and Carleton College in 2010. He is the son of Jean and Tim Cochrane of Grand Marais.
Andy currently lives in Oakland, California, and works for the 3D design and engineering software firm Autodesk.
Emily Martin earns nursing degree
Emily J. Martin, formerly of Hovland, graduated summa cum laude from the College of St. Scholastica on May 10 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, The International Honor Society for Nursing. Currently, she resides in Duluth.
About 840 candidates for graduations participated in a combined baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral ceremony on May 10 in AMSOIL Arena at the DECC in Duluth. A total of 581 bachelor’s degrees were awarded. Don Ness, mayor of Duluth, gave the commencement address. He also was part of the ceremony as a graduating student; he earned a master of arts in management.
Emily, a 2009 CCHS graduate, is the daughter of Nancy and David Martin.
Rodne named to Oklahoma dean’s list
Grand Marais resident Rumer Rianna Rodne has been named to the dean’s honor roll at the University of Central Oklahoma for her work in the spring 2014 semester, a distinction given to those who achieve the highest academic standards.
To be included on the honor roll, a student must record a 3.5 grade point average or better for the semester andnogradelowerthanaBforworkinqualifyingclasses. Additionally, students must complete at least 12 hours of on-campus class credit for the semester. Correspondence credit is not included in determining those included on the honor roll.
Three Grand Portage students earn Masters in tribal administration and governance
Three Grand Portage community members were part of the University of Minnesota – Duluth’s 114th commencement program at the DECC AMSOIL Arena on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Among the graduates were William J. Blackwell Jr., April Marie (Clearwater-Day) McCormick and William Gilbert Myers, each earning a Master’s Degree in tribal administration and governance.
UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black presided over the ceremony, which included the Presentation of Colors by Air Force ROTC Detachment 420.
Drummers and singers from the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa—the MA-IINGAN Singers—performed an honor song featuring a traditional Ojibwe drum. Mike Munnel, UMD’s first American Indian studies graduate, leads the MA-IINGAN Singers. The honor song offered thanks and acknowledgement of the accomplishments of the graduates.
The Grand Portage graduates, like many of the other American Indian students wore pieces of traditional regalia. The yellow, black, white and red sash represents many things, such as the four races, four directions, four stages of life, four seasons and four sacred plants.
Timothy Holst, associate vice-chancellor for graduate education gave the commencement address.
The cover of the Commencement program featured a photograph taken by a 2014 graduate of the UMD School of Fine Arts, of a water droplet. UMD Professor Gloria DeFilipps Brush wrote, “Water droplet reflections remind me of our graduates who have taken much in and will soon be out in the world reflecting that and so many other new experiences.”
The program also read, “The University of Minnesota is proud to recognize the accomplishments of the graduates and joins them in thanking every family member, friend and loved one who has supported their learning, creative endeavors, research, growth and dreams. Together we have collaborated to achieve goals and together we have moved our community toward social justice, equality and respect for all. The spirit of possibility that starts anew today affirms our belief that the people of UMD can positively touch every corner of the globe. We thank you, our newest members of the UMD alumni family, and look forward to following, supporting and celebrating your life achievements.”
